New Delhi, 6 December (Hindustan Reporter). In a major blow to India’s medal prospects, the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has removed shooting, weightlifting and hockey from the list of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Dakar, Senegal.

Shooting, weightlifting and hockey have been included among the 10 non-medal sports that will be part of the “engagement programme” at the Youth Olympics.

At the 2018 Youth Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, India had won 13 medals (three gold, nine silver and one bronze), of which shooting had won four medals (two gold and two silver), while hockey had two. The weightlifting contribution was a silver and a gold.

Paris Olympics double medalist star shooter Manu Bhaker had won gold medal in girls’ 10 meter air pistol and silver medal in mixed 10 meter air pistol.

At its meeting in Lausanne on December 3, the IOC Executive Board has confirmed the competitions and athlete quotas for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), to be held from October 31 to November 13, 2026. Athletes aged 15 to 18 years will participate in the Youth Olympics.

The 10 non-medal sports included in the event are canoe-kayak, golf, hockey, karate, modern pentathlon, shooting, sport climbing, surfing, tennis and weightlifting.

“These sports will not be included in the competition programme, but will be promoted through interactive activities on-site and through digital platforms, emphasizing their role as an integral and official part of the YOG,” the IOC said. “

In total, the Dakar YOG will feature 151 events, 241 fewer than the 2018 Buenos Aires edition, split equally with 72 events for men and women, as well as seven mixed-gender events.

“For the first time in the history of the Summer YOG, full gender parity will be achieved – not only in overall athlete quotas but also in every sport, discipline and event,” the IOC said. The total athlete quota for the Games has been set at 2,700.

“This is in line with the IOC’s commitment to providing an optimized and efficient program while maintaining the distinctive nature of the competition,” the IOC said. “This will allow the Games to be adapted to the local context of Dakar, yet ensure a competitive platform for young athletes from around the world.”

Originally scheduled to be held from 22 October to 9 November in 2022, the 2026 YOG – the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Games – has been postponed by four years given the operational and economic consequences of postponing the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. was delayed.
