At least 20 percent of cyber crimes in India are being committed using the dark web. This claim has been made in the report of a cyber security company. The Dark Web is a platform on the Internet that can only be accessed using special tools. It is usually very difficult to trace the identity and location of a dark web user.
According to a study by cyber security company Lisianthus Tech, the dark web is used by online attackers in 20 percent of cyber crimes in India. Attackers commonly use the dark web to commit cyber crimes such as data breaches, hacking, phishing, ransomware, identity theft, and buying and selling of contraband such as narcotics and weapons. Founder Khushal Kaushik, CEO, Lisianthus Tech, said the study is based on an in-depth analysis of several cyber crime cases registered across the country. This study was conducted on a sample basis for two months, which was completed last week.
The study was completed using samples taken from crime data of police, National Crime Records Bureau and cyber crime and other related portals and analyzed in detail with experts, cyber security consultants. Recently a man was arrested for cultivating marijuana in his rented flat and selling it on the dark web. Last year, the dark web was also used for a ransomware attack on AIIMS in Delhi. According to the report, the use of the dark web has doubled in the last decade and to avoid falling victim to it, users should not allow any online notifications to access their fan books and other apps.
