Amritsar: There was a fatal attack on former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and senior Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal. Badal is serving his sentence awarded by the Akal Takht at the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. He was sitting in his wheelchair with security personnel near the gate of Darbar Sahib when a terrorist from East Khalistan tried to kill him by shooting him. However, the brave police personnel deployed under Badal’s security foiled the attack and the attacker went away from the spot. However, in the meanwhile firing also took place in which no one was injured.
Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal is undergoing religious punishment at Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. In this connection, he was guarding the main gate on Wednesday morning when he was fatally attacked. An East Khalistan terrorist named Narayan Singh Chaura tried to shoot at them. At the same time, Assistant Sub Inspector Jasbir Singh, posted for the security of Sukhbir Singh, got wind of the attack. As soon as Narayan Singh took out his pistol and moved forward to fire, Jasbir Singh caught hold of his hands and raised them up. Due to which firing took place in the air and a major accident was avoided.
After the attack, state Special Director General Arpit Shukla told PTI that more than 20 criminal cases were registered against the attacker Narayan. In 2004, he was also involved in the Burai jail break, in which two terrorists named Jagtar and Paramjeet escaped. According to another report, attacker Narayan Chaura is associated with the banned organization Babbar Khalsa International. He migrated to Pakistan in 1984 and was also involved in smuggling of major arms and explosives into Punjab during the early phase of Khalistani insurgency.
While living in Pakistan, he also wrote a book on guerrilla warfare and traitors. He has also served his sentence in a jail in Punjab. Narayan Singh Chaura was picked up from Jalalabad village in Tarn Taran district in 2013, accused of carrying out the blast at Civil Lines police station in Amritsar in 2010. He was also wanted under UAPA in Tarn Taran and Ropar districts. However, he was released on bail in 2018. He has met the killers of former Chief Minister Bayant Singh in jail and has also tried to instigate the youth of Punjab by writing a book on Khalistan.
