Cyclonic storm Fungal in the Bay of Bengal has wreaked havoc in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The storm that arose on 25th November reached Puducherry on 30th November. Winds gusted up to 90 km per hour along the sea coast in Mahabalipuram and caused heavy rainfall in both the states, leading to waterlogging. There is news of death of 3 people. The storm also affected the weather of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Although the storm weakened within a few hours, the impact of the storm resulted in heavy rainfall across all five states. Puducherry alone received 48.4 cm rainfall in 24 hours, breaking the record of highest rainfall in a day in 30 years. Chennai airport also had to be closed due to the storm. Domestic and international flights were delayed. This too had to be cancelled. Schools and colleges are also closed now. The Meteorological Department has warned that the effect of the storm will last till December 7 and it will continue to rain. State governments are constantly monitoring the situation.

4 states most affected by the storm

The worst impact of Cyclone Fungal was on Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, the storm also wreaked havoc in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Puducherry. More than 800 acres of crops were destroyed due to floods in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Marakkanam and Kottakuppam received 45 to 50 cm rainfall. Schools and colleges remained closed in Kameshwaram, Virundhamavady, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanamadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Eravoyal, Chembodi, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Mayiladuthurai. Flight and train services were affected in Chennai. 7 NDRF teams were deployed in flood affected areas. 1500 people were kept in 2 thousand relief camps.

Strong winds were blowing at a speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. It rained in 16 districts of Karnataka including Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga. Fishermen were kept away from the beach.
