New Delhi, 30 November (HS). FIFA on Friday announced the nominees for the Best Men’s Player award for 2024, which includes the likes of Vinicius Jr., Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Fede Valverde and Toni Kroos.

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonamati leads the nominees for the women’s award. The date of the awards ceremony has not been announced yet. Vinicius Junior and his Real Madrid teammate Rodri are now ready for another clash.

Rodri, who played a key role in Manchester City’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League title and Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, where he was named the best player of the tournament, is a strong favourite.

Vinicius Junior is an important rival for Rodri, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions last season. His performances were crucial in Real Madrid’s La Liga win and the Champions League final win against Borussia Dortmund, where he scored the second goal.

Real Madrid have a strong presence on the shortlist, with six players named, including the recently retired Toni Kroos and Kylian Mbappe.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi, last year’s winners, are also among the contenders.

Messi, who led Argentina to victory in the 2024 Copa America, remains a strong presence in the world of football. Notably absent from the FIFA Best Men’s Selection is Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently surpassed 900 career goals. Despite his record-breaking 35 goals for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League last season, Ronaldo has only featured in lists of the best forwards.
