IMD issues alert of storm and rain with speed of 70 kilometers per hour, schools and colleges closed

IMD heavy rain and cyclone Fangal update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said the deep depression over south-west Bay of Bengal will intensify into Cyclone Fangal in the next 12 hours. This cyclone will move in a north-westerly direction and reach the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on the morning of 30 November. There will be heavy rain with winds reaching 50-60 kmph between Karikal and Mahabalipuram. The Meteorological Department has also said that during this period the wind speed can go up to 70 kilometers per hour.

The latest update from the IMD said the deep depression was stationary for the last six hours and was located about 100 km north-east of Trincomalee. Now it will move in north-northwest direction near the Sri Lankan coast and turn into a cyclone in the next 12 hours. The cyclone is expected to reach Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast on the morning of 30 November.

“The deep depression has moved northwestwards over southwest Bay of Bengal a few hours ago and will cross Sri Lanka coast and reach Tamil Nadu coast in the next two days,” S Kumar, duty officer at the centre, told ANI. “

Impact of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Due to deep pressure, there is heavy rain in Puducherry. Due to this, orders have been given to keep schools and colleges closed today. Puducherry Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam has given this information. Puducherry and Karaikal received 7.5 cm and 9.5 cm rainfall respectively in 24 hours.

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has directed officials to move people from low-lying areas to relief camps. A 24/7 control room has also been set up to monitor the situation. IMD has predicted heavy rain in Puducherry and Karaikal in the next two days.

Flights affected in Tamil Nadu

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain, thundershowers and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts. Heavy rain may also occur in isolated areas of Chennai, Tiruvallur and other districts.

Indigo Airlines issued advisory regarding delay in flights on Wednesday night. The company has said that due to bad weather, flights to Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Salem will be affected. The airline has advised passengers to check their flight status on the website and be prepared to travel.

The IMD has predicted that Cyclone Fengal will weaken into a deep depression by the time it reaches the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts on the morning of November 30. However, rain will continue in the affected areas for the next few days and emergency measures will be required.
