People living in southwestern Canada are getting a spectacular sight tonight. People are surprised and a little scared when they see things like pillars of light falling from the sky. People who have seen these things have seen them only in films till now. But seeing this, people feel as if aliens have attacked. However, this is not the case at all and it is a natural phenomenon. The columns of light that reach the snowy ground below the clouds are called lighthouses.
These lighthouses have been seen in central Alberta where it is currently freezing cold. There the temperature drops to minus 30 degrees Celsius at night. People consider the pillars of light visible in such cold weather to be a supernatural phenomenon but it is an optical illusion of nature.
How are these lighthouses made?
Lighthouses are formed when light from the Earth’s surface is reflected by six types of ice crystals in the frozen clouds above. Tiny ice crystals suspended in the air act like millions of tiny mirrors that reflect light sources. These plate-shaped ice crystals are typically about 0.02 mm in diameter and form a vertical column of light. When seen from the Earth, it appears as if light is falling on the Earth from different places.
Light pillars appear when several weather conditions converge. They require temperatures of -10 to -40 degrees Celsius, high humidity. The wind doesn’t blow. When such light pillars are built in sunlight then they are called Surya Stambh.
