Strategic importance- BRO’s projects are becoming the basis of regional development.

During the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the activities for development and maintenance of infrastructure for the armed forces in the border areas of the country have gained momentum. The Central Government has taken several historic steps for the overall development of the North-Eastern region, strengthening its infrastructure and keeping in mind the security needs. Indian Border Roads Organization (BRO) is handling the responsibility of development of roads of strategic importance in Arunachal Pradesh. BRO’s projects are not limited to military perspective only. Rather, they are also becoming the basis of regional development.

Regarding the Centre’s plans, Subhash Chandra Luniya, head of BRO’s Brahmank Project, said that LAC in Central Arunachal Pradesh. The Brahmank project was launched to accelerate infrastructure development. Under this, road infrastructure is being constructed and maintained in Siang, Upper Siang, West Siang and Shi-Yami districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Also, 04 roads are being maintained in Dhemaji district of Assam. He said that in the year 2022-23 and 2023-24, a 100 meter span arch bridge was built on the Along-Yingkiong road under the Brahmank project. It is situated near the confluence of Siom and Siang rivers. The Siom Bridge was constructed in a record time of 180 days. From the day of establishment of Brahmank Project till today, the construction work of a total of 17 roads has been completely completed, the total length of which is 496 km. Along with this, construction work of 42 permanent purlin and 11 modular bridges has also been completed.

Subhash Chandra Luniya said that the Brahmank project has always been at the forefront in the construction of roads/bridges even in favorable and unfavorable weather conditions for the last many years. The project is committed to provide all-weather connectivity to the troops as well as the public. He said that 1000 km road network was developed and constructed for Siang, Shi-Yomi, West Siang and Upper Siang districts along Siam and Siang valleys. The 386 meter long Gandhi Bridge is under construction near Yinkiong to connect the east and west banks of the Siang River.

Lunia told that Bomdila-Vijayanagar highway will be built in Arunachal Pradesh at a cost of forty thousand crores. Officially it is named National Highway 913. Its length is 1637.150 kilometers. It connects 1683 villages in 12 districts. This will run parallel to the McMahon Line. Rs 28 thousand 229 crores have been approved for this. Its construction will be completed in 2027. This work is also being completed under the supervision of BRO. Similarly, a 2407 kilometer long highway is being built under Trans Arunachal, which will connect Tawang in the north-west to Kanubari in the south-east. This highway will pass through the entire length of the state, passing through 16 districts.

The Border Roads Organization has constructed tunnels in the border areas. These include Sonapur Tunnel in Meghalaya, Theng in Sikkim, Chamba in Uttarakhand, Atal in Himachal Pradesh, Nechiphu and Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. Among these, Sela Tunnel is at a height of 13 thousand feet, which is the highest in the country.
