Kolkata, 27 November (HS). During a heated debate in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday, state minister Firhad Hakim invited BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul to join the ruling party following Trinamool’s landslide victory in the recently held by-elections. To this Paul gave a stern reply.

After the discussion on ‘Constitution Day’, Hakim targeted BJP and said that so much mud was thrown against Trinamool and false propaganda was carried out, yet the result was 6-0.

After this Hakim told Agnimitra Paul that I want to tell you something. Many people from your party have joined our party. Why don’t you do the same? If you do not do this, then in the next election you may lose on your seat also.”

On this, Asansol South MLA Agnimitra Paul immediately hit back and said, “I have an ideology and principles, due to which I am in BJP. This comment of Firhad Hakim has once again exposed the domineering mentality of Trinamool. They have already accepted that I will lose the 2026 elections. Even if my party does not give me a ticket, I will not criticize it. I would advise Hakim to learn to respect women and increase the respect of women opposition leaders.”

Earlier in his speech, Paul had accused the state government of violating the Constitution, in response to which Firhad Hakim made this comment.

It is noteworthy that BJP has faced a crushing defeat in the recently held by-elections. Agnimitra Paul had won the Asansol South seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. However, she lost from the Medinipur seat in the 2022 Asansol Lok Sabha by-election and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the 2021 assembly elections, BJP had won 77 seats in the 294-seat assembly, but after losing several seats in the by-elections, the party’s numbers have come down to 69. At the same time, many big party leaders like Babul Supriyo and Mukul Roy have joined Trinamool, due to which BJP is facing difficulties in keeping its organization strong in the state.
