Recently retired Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud called for more investment in the infrastructure for the country’s judiciary to handle cases, saying about 21 per cent of posts in district courts are vacant. In an interview given to a news agency, he said that the ratio of judges to population in India is one of the lowest in the world.

We do not have enough District Judges to handle the burden of cases coming to the District Courts. Therefore, first of all we have to increase the ratio of judges to the population by appointing more judges. The former CJI also stressed the need to appoint more qualified people and said that governments will have to invest a lot in infrastructure. Retired CJI Chandrachud also said there should be some system like All India Judicial Services Examination to fill vacancies in district courts.
