Today it has been 16 years since the Mumbai 26-11 attacks. Even though so much time has passed since the attack, the horrific images still linger. Many people lost their lives in this attack, but there were many who sacrificed their lives to save the lives of others. So let’s talk today about those brave soldiers who did not care about their lives to save the lives of others.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan lost his life in this attack. Let us tell you that he was born on 15 March 1977 in Kozhikode, Kerala. Major Unnikrishnan joined the NSG on 20 January 2007. During the attack, he and his team saved the lives of hostages at the Taj Hotel, where 80 people were killed and 240 were injured. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan also lost his life during this operation. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
Tukaram Omble
Tukaram Omble, working as Assistant Sub Inspector in Mumbai Police, was also on duty during the 26/11 attacks. He died while trying to catch terrorist Ajmal Kasab at Girgaum Chowpatty in Mumbai. Let us tell you that Tukaram did not have any weapon, yet he bravely faced Kasab and grabbed his rifle, so that he could be captured alive. Amidst the scuffle, Kasab fired several bullets, seriously injuring Omble and killing him. Tukaram Omble was also posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his bravery.
Hemant Karkare
Hemant Karkare was serving as the former ATS chief of Maharashtra at the time of 26/11 attacks. He was martyred outside Cama Hospital in South Mumbai, just 10 minutes away from CST station. Karkar has previously worked in RAW and the Indian Mission in Austria and was joint commissioner of Mumbai before being appointed ATS chief. He was killed along with senior officers Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar when terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail opened fire on his Toyota Qualis.
Ashok Kamte
Ashok Kamte, Additional Commissioner of Mumbai, was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Maruti Rao Narayan Rao Kamte. He was sitting on the front seat of the police SUV and was martyred. He was martyred in the firing of Ajmal Kasabe along with Hemant Karkare and Vijay Salaskar. For his bravery he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
Vijay Salaskar
Before his martyrdom, Vijay Salaskar was working as the head of Mumbai Anti Extortion Cell. He was killed by Ajmal Kasab during the 26/11 attacks. When he was traveling in a Toyota Qualis with Hemant Karkare and Kamte. For his bravery he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
What happened on 26/11?
Importantly, in the 26/11 attacks, a group of 10 terrorists wreaked havoc on the streets of Mumbai. On the night of November 26, 2008, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists entered the city of Mumbai. 166 people were killed and 300 injured in four days. The attacks took place in various parts of Mumbai including Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Oberoi Trident, Taj Hotel and Nariman House. 166 people including security personnel were killed in this attack. Today it has been 16 years since this incident. Let us salute those brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country.
