The death toll may increase
Nadeem Aslam Chaudhary, chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in a tribal area in northwest Pakistan on Thursday. Chaudhary said a woman and a child were also among those killed in the attack in Kurram tribal district. “This is a major tragedy and the death toll is expected to rise,” he said.
Tension between Shia and Sunni Muslims
There has been tension for decades between Shia and Sunni Muslims over land disputes in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. No group has taken responsibility for the incident. According to the information, “There were two convoys of passenger vehicles, one was carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and the other from Parachinar to Peshawar, when the gunmen opened fire on them.” Choudhary said his relatives were traveling in a caravan from Peshawar.
President Zardari condemned
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the incident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased. The PPP said in a post on Twitter that attacking innocent passengers is a cowardly and inhuman act. The party said that those responsible for the incident should be given strict punishment.
