Taking an important decision, the Assam government has announced to change the name of the famous Karimganj district to Shri Rambhoomi. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced the renaming of Karimganj in the state and said the decision was taken in the Assam Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Karimganj district of Assam is adjacent to Bangladesh. The Assam government on Tuesday decided to change the name of Karimganj district located in the Barak Valley to Shri Bhoomi, Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said.

It further said that 100 years ago, poet Guru Rabindranath Tagore had described the modern Karimganj district as Shribhoomi – the land of Goddess Lakshmi and today the Assam Cabinet has fulfilled the long-standing demand of our people. The initiative to change the name of the district will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people here. The CM said that we are gradually changing the names of those places which have no historical context or dictionary meaning.

‘Kalapahad’ does not appear in Assamese or Bengali dictionaries, nor does ‘Karimganj’ Place names are usually based on linguistic meaning and many such names have already been modified. Changing the name of Karimganj will preserve the cultural context, as the new name has meaning in both Assamese and Bengali dictionaries. He said more places could be renamed to reflect Assam’s history and linguistic roots.
