Jammu, 13 November (HS). Responding to Omar Abdullah’s recent comments regarding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), state BJP spokesperson Purnima Sharma stressed that any decision related to the treaty is the sole prerogative of the central government. He highlighted that the IWT, signed in 1960, is a historic water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan and any amendment must consider the national interest and sovereignty of India.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the senior BJP leader emphasized that recent developments in India-Pakistan relations have underlined the importance of safeguarding India’s water resources and ensured that agreements like the IWT complement the current geo- Reflect the political scenario. He said Omar Abdullah’s statements on water treaties reflected a lack of understanding of the seriousness of such treaties and the strategic considerations involved. He said the BJP stands firmly with the Center in protecting India’s interests and ensuring the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir.
Purnima further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has consistently shown a strong stance on issues related to national security and water rights. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have full faith in the Centre’s judgment and wisdom in handling sensitive issues like the water treaty. He said the expertise and resources of the Central Government ensure best results for the nation and the Union Territory.
