Chennai rain IMD forecast: The low pressure weather system formed over the south-west Bay of Bengal caused heavy rain in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Chennai city on Wednesday. The system is expected to reach close to the coastal areas of the state and bring heavy rains over the central and southern parts of the state.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in 12 districts on November 12. The alert was extended to 17 districts for 13 November and 25 districts for 15 November. The agency said in its bulletin on Wednesday that there is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 13 to 16.
6 cm rain on Tuesday
It rained heavily in Chennai overnight on Tuesday. 6 cm rainfall was recorded in many areas of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, like Adyar, Meenambakkam and Nandanam. Schools and colleges in Chennai will remain open on Wednesday (November 13) and Thursday (November 14). In view of the heavy rains, the administration had ordered schools and colleges to remain closed on Monday and Tuesday. However, in view of heavy rains, the state government declared holiday in schools in Perambalur, Ariyalur and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday. Apart from this, schools and colleges have also been closed in Mayiladuthurai district due to heavy rains.
Possibility of heavy rain in many areas for the next 2 days
According to Hindustan Times report, heavy rainfall (more than 7 cm) is likely at isolated places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday and Thursday. There is also a possibility of rain and lightning in many parts of the state, with wind speed reaching 55 kmph. The IMD has predicted heavy rain in select areas of the city on Wednesday, the intensity of which will gradually reduce on Thursday.
The government has made special preparations to deal with the impact of rain.
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said the state government was prepared to deal with the impact of heavy rains and assured all arrangements in Chennai city. Udhayanidhi said, ‘Based on the study of the impact of rain in October, we have increased the number of motor pumps and volunteers. We have 1194 motor pumps, 152 super sucker machines. There has been an increase of 21 percent in the appointment of motors and machines as compared to October. Tamil Nadu government is fully prepared for the rain.
