Senior Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed to the important post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and will hold the post of CJI from 11 November 2024. He will continue to serve in the country's Supreme Court until his term ends on May 13, 2025.
He is expected to improve the administrative functioning of the Supreme Court and deliver important far-reaching judgments. He will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. They have to take appropriate steps to diversify the judges selected by the collegium in the High Courts and the Supreme Court and to dispose of the pending cases. They will have to end institutional conspiracies. Matters involving personal liberty should be dealt with expeditiously. Sanjeev Khanna started his career as a lawyer in Tis Hazari Court of Delhi and after a long journey he became the CJI of the country.
Kaka Hansraj Khanna is an inspiration
His uncle Justice Hansraj Khanna was a source of inspiration for Justice Khanna. Who resigned from the Supreme Court in 1976 when Justice MH Baig was appointed to the post of CJI by Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi was angered by his decision in the case of ADM Jabalpur vs Shivkant Shukla. This case later became known as the Habeas Corpus case. Khanna's journey as a lawyer began in 1983. He has given some important decisions including bringing the CJI office under the ambit of RTI Act. He gave judgments on important issues like constitutionality of electoral bonds, Articles 370 and 356 and EVMs.
