Kidney stones are a painful and serious problem. This condition occurs when minerals, salts and other elements accumulate in the kidneys and turn into stone-like particles. Often this problem develops gradually without any symptoms and when the stone becomes large or obstructs the urinary tract, severe pain and other problems start occurring. The risk of kidney stones increases not only due to lack of water or food but also due to many diseases and physical problems. If kidney stones are not treated on time, it can cause kidney failure. In such a situation, it is important for us to know which people are at risk of kidney stones. For better information on this subject, we call Dr. Spoke to Seema Yadav, MD, Physician, Care Institute of Life Sciences, Lucknow.

1). People with obesity may develop kidney stones

Obesity can be the main cause of these stones. An unbalanced lifestyle and overweight can increase acidity in the body, which causes stones. Exercising, eating a healthy diet, and controlling weight can be beneficial for the kidneys.

2). Kidney stones can occur in patients with type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is caused by lack of insulin, which increases the amount of sugar in the body. In this condition, calcium and oxalate levels in the urine may increase, increasing the chance of stone formation. Diabetics should control their sugar and get regular checkups done to avoid kidney stones.

3). UTI patients may have kidney stones

Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) can increase the risk of kidney stone formation. Some bacteria convert urine into ammonia, which causes stones to form. To prevent UTIs, maintain good hygiene and use antibiotics if necessary.

4). Bowel disease can lead to kidney stones

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes inflammation in the digestive tract, causing the body to absorb too much oxalate. Too much oxalate can accumulate in the kidneys and cause stones. To avoid kidney stones, IBD patients should reduce their intake of oxalate-rich foods.

5). Hyperparathyroidism can lead to kidney stones

In hyperparathyroidism, the parathyroid glands produce excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone, leading to increased calcium levels in the blood. Excess calcium can accumulate in the kidneys and cause kidney stones. In such a situation, it is necessary to take calcium controlling medicines and diet as per the doctor's advice.

If someone in the family has the problem of kidney stones, then you too may have this problem. Some people are more likely to develop kidney stones due to genetic reasons.
