Kolkata, 09 November (HS). Three months ago, the case of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital sparked a huge mass movement in West Bengal. After this incident, junior doctors started a movement demanding safety and justice, which gradually turned into a confrontation with the government raising many more issues which more or less still continues.
Accused civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested, but due to alleged flaws in the investigation, the case was handed over to CBI. So far the CBI has convicted only one person, while activists and a section of civil society consider it incomplete and say more people are involved. In this incident, former principal of RG Kar Sandeep Ghosh and the then in-charge of Tala police station Abhijeet Mandal were arrested and sent to jail on charges of destroying evidence.
The movement saw unprecedented support across the city and state. Various sections of the society participated in the 'Women's Night Intervention' program held on August 14 and in public meetings and rallies. Many Tollywood stars and some political party members also supported the movement. The agitators even presented their views in the High Court and the Supreme Court. During this time, the 'carnival of treason' organized by the agitators became famous, in which the administration and the agitators stood in front of each other.
In this incident, talks failed several times, because the agitators' demand for live streaming talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was not agreed upon. But then the junior doctors partially called off their strike in front of Swasthya Bhawan. Later the doctors also ended their fast, but made it clear that the movement is not completely over.
Now the movement of junior doctors in the state seems to be quiet, but the opposition of the state is trying to keep it alive till the 2026 assembly elections so that the political advantage of the anti-incumbency atmosphere can be taken in the elections.
