New Delhi, 17 February (HS). India's veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad with immediate effect due to a family medical emergency. Ashwin will no longer be in the ongoing third Test match. BCCI confirmed this in an official statement on Friday night.
A BCCI press release said, “Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad with immediate effect due to a family medical emergency. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully support Ashwin in these challenging times.”
BCCI further said, “BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of players and their loved ones is of utmost importance. The Board requests to respect the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they go through this challenging time. The Board and the team will continue to provide all necessary support to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to provide assistance as required. Team India appreciates the understanding and sympathy of fans and media at this sensitive time.”
Talking about the third test match, India batted first and scored 445 runs in this match. In reply, at the end of the second day's play, England had scored 207 runs for 2 wickets. Ashwin took his 500th Test wicket by dismissing Jack Crawley.
