The era of world star footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has ended and young Rodrigo Hernandez has won the Ballon d'Or award. Rodri also became the first footballer born in the 1990s to win this award. Rodrygo beat Real Madrid stars Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham in the race for the award.
Rodri, 28, started his senior career with Villarreal in 2015. After this he became a part of Atletico Madrid and in 2019, Manchester City. This is the first international award for a defensive midfielder. Barcelona's Etana Bonamati has won the Ballon d'Or award for the second consecutive year in the women's category. He played an important role in helping Manchester City win the Premier League title for the fourth consecutive time this year. Rodrigo was awarded the Best Player of the Tournament award as Spain won the European Championship title for a record fourth time. After 21 years, Argentina's legendary footballer Messi and Portugal's Ronaldo were not included in the awards list. Ultimately both of them were not nominated in 2003.
Messi was awarded the Ballon d'Or in 2023. Messi has won this award a record eight times. Ronaldo has won this award five times. Both have a total of 13 awards in their names.
