Dhamtari, 24 October (HS). There is a Chhattisgarhi tradition of dancing Sua before the festival of Diwali. Teams of women and school children are performing Ghum Ghum Sua Sua dance in the streets and localities. In return, people are happily gifting them as gifts.
The festival of lights brings happiness. Preparations for the festival start about a fortnight in advance. These days, groups of children and women can be seen roaming around in the streets of cities and villages performing Sua dance. Women performing Sua dance near Ambedkar Chowk on Wednesday told that their group comes out for Sua dance every year before Diwali. This tradition has been going on for years. Now the number of dance groups has reduced as before. There is more enthusiasm among children about this festival. One can see the happiness of children entertaining people by singing different Chhattisgarhi traditional songs.
In Dhamtari city, apart from the city, groups of women and girls from nearby villages also come to dance Sua around the Deep festival. Being the biggest festival of the year, there is hope that they will receive more offerings (gifts) in return for the Sua dance.
