Srinagar, 21 October (Hindustan Reporter). The newly elected members of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly were administered oath by temporary speaker Mubarak Gul on Monday. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took oath in Kashmiri language. National Conference (NC) has emerged as the largest party in the recently held assembly elections. Congress, the oldest political party of Jammu and Kashmir, has extended outside support to the government with six MLAs. Five independent MLAs, one AAP MLA and CPI(M) have also extended their support to the government. BJP is the second largest party with 29 seats. This is his best performance so far in Jammu and Kashmir.
House leader Omar Abdullah, 54, was the first MLA to take oath. Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah and his British wife Molly Abdullah, often faced criticism for not being able to speak his mother tongue. The third-generation politician from the Abdullah family is fluent in English but had poor fluency in local languages like Hindi, Urdu and Kashmiri at the beginning of his political career in the late 1990s. However, during his first term as chief minister from 2009 to 2014, Omar Abdullah took lessons in these three languages to improve his speaking skills and on Monday he took oath as an MLA in Kashmiri.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Chaudhary took oath in English. The six-year-long legislative hiatus ended with the swearing-in ceremony of the MLAs. There are 51 first-time MLAs, including BJP MLA from Kishtwar Shagun Parihar, who at 29 is the youngest member. National Conference veteran and MLA from Charar-e-Sharif Abdul Rahim Rather is the oldest at the age of 80. Rather and party colleague Ali Mohammad Sagar (MLA from Khanyar) have been elected to the assembly a record seven times. Sagar has been a member of the Assembly since 1983, while Rather began his long tenure as an MLA in 1977.
