Earlier the length of the National Highway from Kiratpur to Pung in Punjab was 106 km, which has now reduced to 69 km. This will save passengers one hour. However, this four-lane stretch till Pung has been opened for vehicles on 6 August 2023 after a trial run. It will be formally inaugurated today. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed all preparations for the inauguration of the first phase of the four-lane road. Last year also, in the month of July, preparations were made by PM Modi to inaugurate the first phase of the four-lane road. But then due to heavy rain it got damaged from four sides. Due to this the inauguration was postponed. Rs 4,759 crore has been spent in building this four-lane road in the first phase. It took four years to make it. The distance from Kiratpur to Pung has been reduced by 37 km, while after the completion of the second phase the distance to Manali will be reduced by 47 km. The distance from Kiratpur to Manali is currently 237 km, which will reduce to 190 km after the completion of four lane work. km Will remain.

This will greatly benefit the local people as well as the tourists coming from Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Manali, Lahaul Spiti and Leh-Ladakh. This will save 2 hours in traveling to Manali. NHAI has set a speed limit of 60 km per hour on this four lane. In case of speeding, challan is automatically issued by cameras installed on all four lanes. Gramaura and Baloh toll plazas have also started on this four lane. 5 tunnels have been constructed from Kiratpur to Pung. NHAI had earlier targeted to complete the four-lane work till Manali by June 2024. But due to the devastation caused by heavy rains last year, the road has disappeared at many places. The situation is such that new roads have to be built at many places. Where the road is likely to be damaged by heavy rains and Beas water in future, replacement tunnels are being constructed. During this, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone of two-lane Hamirpur bypass at Hamirpur on Shimla-Mator corridor.
