In the match against New Zealand, Pant scored 99 runs in 105 balls, which was clean bowled by fast bowler William. He has now become the second wicket-keeper batsman in the history of Indian cricket to miss a century by just one run. Earlier in the year 2012, MS Dhoni was out on the score of 99.

In the second innings, when Virat Kohli was out after scoring 70 runs, Rishabh Pant came to bat. When Pant came to the crease, India's score was 231 runs at the loss of 3 wickets. After which Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan started batting in an explosive manner. An important partnership of 177 runs was registered between the two. Sarfaraz scored 150 runs while Pant's innings ended on 99 runs. If he had completed the century, he would have overtaken Dhoni and become the Indian wicket-keeper batsman with the highest number of centuries in Test cricket. MS Dhoni became the first Indian wicketkeeper batsman to be dismissed after scoring 99 runs. In December 2012, India-England Test match was being played in Nagpur, in which Dhoni was run out on 99 runs in the first innings. He was run out by Alastair Cook. That match ended in a draw.
Pant is the only player to be out on 99 in the last 10 years
