It is noteworthy that Nijjar was murdered in June 2023. India on Monday decided to recall its diplomats and expel Canadian diplomats in response to the Canadian government's attempt to prosecute the Indian High Commissioner and other officials in connection with its investigation into the case. Canada also announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats.

It is noteworthy that before this, India-Canada relations had reached its worst level when Canada had tried to involve the Indian High Commissioner in the investigation of Nijjar's murder. After this, India reacted strongly and not only recalled its diplomats from Canada, but also expelled the Canadian High Commissioner from India.
