Bengaluru: India's superstar batsmen suffered an embarrassing defeat against a quality New Zealand bowling attack in rainy conditions as the hosts were bowled out for just 46 runs in 31.2 overs in the first innings of the first Test. India also made a tainted record of lowest score in Asia. Apart from this, Gharangana recorded the lowest score in Indian Test history. Five batsmen including Kohli, Rahul and Sarfaraz could not even open their account. Only Pant (20) and Jaiswal (13) could reach double figures in India's innings. Henry took five wickets for 15 runs and O'Rourke took four wickets for 22 runs.
Before the fans could recover from the Indian team's shocking performance, Conway's 91-run innings took New Zealand to 180 for three at the end of the first day's play. At the end of the game, Rachin Ravindra was at the crease with 22 runs and Daryl Mitchell with 14 runs. With this, New Zealand has achieved a lead of 134 runs in the first innings. It is noteworthy that due to heavy rain even the toss could not be bowled on the first day. Even on the second day, when India's score was 13 runs for three wickets in 12.4 overs, rain stopped the play for a while.
Very disappointing performance of Indian batsmen
Captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first and included three spinners in the team despite rainy conditions. New Zealand's fast bowlers Southee and O'Rourke made an aggressive start. Southee bowled Rohit (2). O'Rourke got Kohli (0) caught out by Phillips and Sarfaraz (0) was caught by Conway off the bowling of Henry. Phillips and Henry took extraordinary catches.
21 run partnership between Pant-Jaiswal
India had the highest partnership of 21 runs between Pant (20) and Jaiswal (13) for the fourth wicket. Which was the highest in India's innings. O'Rourke broke this partnership by dismissing Jaiswal, who then also dismissed Rahul (0). Henry dealt a blow to India by dismissing Jadeja (0), Ashwin (0) and Pant (20). After lunch, Rourke dismissed Bumrah (1) and Henry Kuldeep (2), reducing India's innings to 46 runs in 31.2 overs.
New Zealand got the same pitch which cost India so much!
The pitch on which the Indian batsmen had to struggle to avoid losing wickets was the same pitch that gave home runs to New Zealand. Conway scored 91 runs in 105 balls with the help of 11 fours and 3 sixes. He made a partnership of 67 runs with Latham (15) and 75 runs with Young (33). Young was dismissed by Kuldeep Latham and Jadeja. Ashwin gave India hope of returning to the match by dismissing Conway.
world's lowest score
In the 1955 Test against England at Auckland, New Zealand were all out for just 26 runs in 27 overs, the lowest score in Test history. Whereas India's lowest score is 36 runs, which was recorded in the Adelaide Test against Australia in 2020.
India's score of 46 runs against New Zealand in Bengaluru is 18th in the world. Even in the 1994 Port of Spain Test, England were out in the 46th over against the West Indies.
