Mumbai: The Customs Department has achieved great success at Mumbai Airport. Air Intelligence Unit has arrested two passengers with gold worth Rs 1.25 crore. A case has been registered against both of them under the Customs Act-1962.
The total weight of the seized gold is 1.725 kg. The passenger had hidden the gold in his undergarments. In the second case, the Customs Department caught a passenger with gold worth Rs 33 lakh and a phone worth Rs 6 lakh.
The accused was arrested on the basis of secret information
Mumbai Customs said the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) traced the passenger from Dubai to Bangkok. The incident is of 15th October. The passenger was chased on the basis of secret information. He was going to the toilet with an airport employee. During investigation, gold was recovered from the passenger. The passenger had hidden this consignment of gold in his undergarments.
24 carat gold recovered
Customs department officials said that three pieces of 24 carat gold were found. Their weight is about 1.725 kg. The value of the recovered gold is said to be Rs 1.25 crore. During interrogation, the passenger claimed that this consignment of gold was given to him by another passenger.
Another passenger was also caught in the search operation
Officials said the AIU conducted an intensive search operation at the airport after the journey was revealed. After much effort the second passenger was also caught. Initial investigation has indicated a relationship between the airport employee and another passenger. According to officials, the accused have already committed smuggling twice.
Expensive phones were also found
In another case, the Customs department recovered 24 carat gold powder from a passenger coming to Mumbai from Dubai. Its total weight is 455 grams. The estimated price is Rs 33,00,880. Apart from this, expensive phones have also been found. Their estimated price is Rs 6,11,790. The accused had hidden the phone in his luggage, while the gold powder was hidden inside his body.
