Chennai heavy rain updates: Many areas have been submerged due to torrential rains in Chennai. It has been raining continuously since yesterday morning. In some areas the water is knee deep and in some areas the canals are filled with water. Many parts of the city, including Madeli Subway and Mambalam area, are submerged.
Waterlogging on roads and highways has caused problems for public transport, including buses and local trains. There is darkness in many areas due to power failure.
Red alert for next two days also
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in many parts of the state on October 17 and 18 and warned of heavy rain. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the Deputy Chief Minister have reviewed the situation. Regarding the rain situation, Udhayanidhi Stalin said on Tuesday, 'Chennai has received about 5 cm of rain in the last 24 hours. Average rainfall has been recorded. The situation is largely under control. Highest rainfall occurs in Sholinganallur and Teynampet. About 6 cm rainfall has been recorded in Teynampet. There has been no power cut in any area of Chennai.
Only water in more than 300 areas
More than eight trees fell due to heavy rain. 26 teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed in Chennai and all coastal areas. Of the 22 subways in Chennai, two have been flooded and traffic has been disrupted.
Holiday declared in schools and colleges
Tamil Nadu government has declared public holiday in schools and colleges in four districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu to avoid serious security situation due to heavy rains. Even in private offices, employees have been appealed to work from home or at least invite people to the office. Essential services including police, fire brigade, municipal administration and transportation of essential commodities will remain operational.
