Tension in India-Canada relations increased after Canada accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In June 2023, Nijjar was shot dead in the parking lot of a gurudwara in Surrey, Canada. After this, the Canadian government has made serious allegations against India without any concrete evidence.
Canada's statements against India
India repeatedly demanded concrete evidence but instead of providing evidence, Canada kept making statements against India. Recently Canada had accused Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma. In response, India has recalled its ambassador and expelled six Canadian diplomats.
Canada became new Pakistan
Many international relations experts have commented on this issue. Sushant Sarin, senior fellow at Observer Research Foundation, said that Canada has become the new Pakistan for India. Sarin's statement indicates that Canada is now giving shelter to anti-India elements in the same way as Pakistan gives shelter to terrorists and becomes a part of diplomatic disputes. People like Michael Kallman, Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and Amish Tripathi have also confirmed that Canada has become the new Pakistan under the leadership of Justin Trudeau. Kalman said that, at present, India's diplomatic relations with Canada are worse than those with Pakistan.
