The submarine will be constructed at the shipbuilding center in Visakhapatnam. The submarine will be 95 percent indigenous. This submarine will be different from the Arihant class. This project will be built under Advanced Technology Vessel. India's move comes at a time when 7-8 Chinese naval warships and 3-4 paramilitary ships can be seen in the Indian Ocean region every month and this number is likely to increase in the future. At present, Chinese surveillance ship 'Jiang Yang Hong 3' has been spotted off the coast of Chennai and ballistic missile tracker 'Yuan Wang 7' has been spotted off the coast of Mauritius.
Indian Navy's strength will increase
Due to China's growing presence in the Indian Ocean region, national security concerns have led to the choice of nuclear submarines to intercept and monitor PLA activities, particularly in the southern Indian Ocean. At present two submarines will be built, later four more can be built. At the same time, India has recently launched its second SSBN i.e. nuclear submarine INS Arighat. The Indian Navy is going to get many types of warships and submarines within the next year. These warships include frigates, corvettes, destroyers, submarines and survey ships. Their inclusion in the Navy will increase the level of security in the Indian Ocean region.
Why are nuclear submarines necessary?
Nuclear powered submarines can remain underwater for long periods of time. China already has 6 Shang class nuclear submarines. The delivery of Akula class nuclear submarines from Russia to India has been postponed to 2028. The Navy needs these submarines to increase surveillance in the Indian Ocean region. It is also important to understand that diesel-electric submarines have to surface at least once a day to charge the batteries. Meanwhile, diesel-electric submarines can be attacked. Apart from this, diesel submarines are sensitive to air attack. Diesel submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion can remain underwater for longer periods, but these submarines have to compromise on onboard weapons as well as speed.
India becomes the sixth nuclear triad country in the world
Arighat is capable of launching submarine missiles, as tested by Arihant on 14 October 2022. After this, K-15 SLBM was successfully tested from Arihant. With this, India has become the sixth nuclear triad country in the world apart from America, Russia, Britain, France and China.
