Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has changed the rules related to Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). The new rules will come into effect from November 1, 2024. The government has set new criteria for post study work permit. The Government of Canada has designed this term to address labor shortages in particular industries.

The Government of Canada also wants to ensure that students have knowledge of the English language as well as the French language. International students who want to work in Canada after graduation must now meet new requirements for a post-study work permit. The new rules have been made very strict, due to which international students and especially Indians are facing problems.

You will have to pass a language test to get a work permit.
One of the most important of the new rules for post-study work visas is the language proficiency test. Students seeking employment after graduation must now prove proficiency in English or French. For English, students must clear any one of CELPIP, IELTS and PTE.

Whereas for French language, TEF Canada or TCF Canada test will have to be given. Undergraduate, graduate or doctoral students are required to achieve Canadian Language Benchmark Level 7 in four competencies, including reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Rules for work permit application also changed after studies
International students have 180 days to apply for a work permit after completing their studies in Canada. However, if a student wishes to work before obtaining the PGWP, he or she must obtain a valid permit. During application the student must show his/her degree, diploma, official transcript or completion letter from the institution.

According to the new rule, graduates will no longer be able to apply for a postgraduate work permit at the port of entry. This requires online submission from Canada or abroad. Also, people who want to work in fields that require medical testing must opt ​​for a medical test 90 days before applying for a work permit.
