Barley of this species is climate adapted and disease resistant. This information was given by Dr. Vijay Kumar Yadav, Barley Director of Seed and Field of the University on Wednesday.

He informed that a new variety of barley, Azad Barley 34 (KB 2031) has been developed by the university. This climate-adapted and disease-resistant barley variety has been recommended for release by the Central Species Release Committee in October 2024.

Dr. Yadav said that at present 19.2 lakh metric tons are being produced in an area of ​​6.28 lakh hectares in the country with a productivity of 30.4 quintals, while 5.82 metric tons is being produced in an area of ​​1.70 lakh hectares in the state. Its productivity is 34.13 quintals per hectare.

Will prove beneficial for barren land

Dr. Vijay Kumar Yadav said that this species is tolerant to barren lands and the production of barley will be promoted in barren lands. This variety becomes ripe in 134 days, its grains are well shaped and the protein content is 12.15%. This variety is tolerant to blanch spot disease and has the capacity to produce 38 quintals per hectare in saline and alkaline soils. In the team that developed this variety, Dr. Vijay Kumar Yadav, Dr. PK Gupta, Dr. Somveer, Dr. PK Singh, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Dr. Javed Bahar, Dr. Charul Kanchan along with technical assistants Rajesh Kumar and Pankaj Kumar have made special contributions. .
