Jayen Mehta, managing director of Amul and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), said the milk recently launched by Amul in the US has been 'hugely successful' and is now set to enter the European market. He said that if this happens then it will be a historic moment for the brand. Speaking at the 11th Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Lecture on 'Amul Model: Transforming the Lives of Millions' organized by private business management institute XLRI, Mehta said, “India is now the world's largest milk producer and will become the world's largest milk producer in the coming years. Will become the largest milk producer.” One third of the total milk production will be in India.

Mehta said dairy is not just a business, it is the lifeline of rural India. Talking about Amul's recent launch of Doodh in the US, Mehta said that it has been 'hugely successful', and now they are all set to enter the European market for the first time. To remain relevant, he said, Amul focuses on offering protein-rich, organic and chemical-free products. He is the founder of Amul, Dr. Kurien appreciated the environment developed by him. Amul collects more than 310 lakh liters of milk every day

Mehta said that Amul collects more than 310 lakh liters of milk every day. With 107 dairy plants across India and over 50 products, Amul supplies 22 billion packs annually, he said. He claimed that Amul's turnover was Rs. Rs 80,000 crore and is now the strongest dairy and food brand globally, owned by 36 lakh farmers. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Verghese Kurien's daughter Nirmala Kurien said that 50 years ago her father had a dream that the country struggling with milk shortage would one day become self-reliant.
