However, a new study has revealed how back pain can be prevented from increasing. The study suggests reducing sitting time and exercising daily to prevent back pain from worsening.
Joa Norha, a doctoral researcher and physiotherapist at the University of Turku, Finland, said people concerned about back health should reduce sitting at work or during leisure time. To understand the relationship between activity and back pain and the mechanisms underlying back pain, researchers included 64 adults with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome. Over the course of the 6-month study, participants reduced their sitting time by an average of 40 minutes per day.
Fat accumulates in the back muscles
People with back pain often have excess fat stored in their back muscles. They are also likely to have reduced glucose metabolism or insulin sensitivity, making them more likely to have pain. However, the study found no association between back muscle fat or glucose metabolism. Additionally, the researchers said that being overweight or obese and metabolic syndrome not only increases the risk of back pain, but also increases the risk of heart disease.

Physiotherapist Joao Nora said that just standing may not be helpful. Instead, walking or more vigorous exercise may be more beneficial.
