Kolkata, 4 October (Hindustan Reporter). R.G. at the Durga Puja organized by Sri Sri Saraswati and Kali Mata Temple Parishad in Kankurgachi area of Kolkata. A unique sculpture depicting the pain of a tax victim has been unveiled. The idol, named 'Lajja', depicts Goddess Durga covering her face with her hands, and a dead body of a woman is placed in front of her.

A spokesperson of the puja committee said that when the devotees will enter the pandal, they will see the goddess covering her face while the body of the woman is kept in front of them. The lion who lives with the goddess is also sitting in mourning in front of the dead body of the woman with his head bowed. A white apron and stethoscope are placed near the statue, symbolizing the medical profession.

The committee spokesperson said, “This is our expression of protest against the attacks and violence against women, ranging from Kamduni and Hanskhali to the recent tragedy of RG Kar. The voices raised against this incident, which has shaken the consciousness of the entire country, have not stopped till now. We want to express our pain and sorrow through this Durga Puja.”

Despite this, the traditional idol of the goddess has been retained at the end of the pandal. The spokesperson said, “We did not want to change the ‘sabeki’ (traditional) look of the mother. This theme has been added this year due to the contemporary situation.”

Meanwhile, the famous Santosh Mitra Square puja pandal, which had earlier planned a laser show at its Las Vegas replica, has changed its theme in the wake of the RG Kar tragedy. “We will now display slogans like ‘Justice for RG Kar’ and ‘Justice for Abhaya’ and images of burning lamps on the circular surface,” said Sajal Ghosh, secretary of the event.

For the past 40 years, Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata and outside have highlighted cultural heritage, art and social issues such as environmental protection, human trafficking and violence against women on their stage.
