What was the incident?
In this program, Zakir Naik was invited to give awards to orphan girls who excelled in studies, but during the program, Zakir Naik got angry when the administrator called the girls 'daughters'. Naik walked off the stage and later lashed out at the event organisers, saying, “The organizers are addressing these girls as daughters, this is wrong, against Islamic principles, as these girls are non-mahram.” She cannot be touched and cannot even be called a daughter.
What is non-mahram?
Mahram is an Arabic word. This word is used for family members. Those members who cannot get married. So, non-mahram means someone who is not a close relative, someone you do not know. So such a person is considered eligible for marriage. Zakir Naik called orphan girls non-mahram and described them as 'parky' and 'marriageable'. Many journalists were present in the program. Controversy has arisen after this incident was shown on local news channels.
Zakir Naik is a fugitive from India
In 2016, India's investigating agency started a legal investigation against Zakir Naik in a money laundering case. Zakir was in Malaysia at that time. Zakir stayed in Malaysia because if he had come to India, he would have faced jail and since then he has been living there. The fugitive from India recently visited Pakistan where he met Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. He has also made controversial remarks in Pakistan regarding the ban on eating cow meat in India.
