Athens: Greece, located in southern Europe, recently legalized gay marriage. In Greece now men can marry men and women can marry women. Despite being a staunch Christian country and facing opposition from the local church, the Parliament there has passed a bill related to this.
Meanwhile, a lesbian couple has got married. This is the first case in the country when two boys got married.
Gay novelist and lawyer get married
A Greek novelist and his partner, a lawyer, marry in the city hall of Athens. The two became the first same-sex couple to marry in Greece. Let us tell you that just three weeks ago, in a major change, gay marriage has been legalized in the conservative Christian country Greece.
Mayor also celebrated the wedding
The wedding of Petros Hadzopoulos, also known as Auguste Courteau, and lawyer Anastasios Samoulidis was also celebrated by the Mayor of Athens. Only two dozen guests attended the ceremony held at the Greek capital's city hall.
Hadzopoulos described the event as a dream come true that he never had the courage to pursue as a teenager.
Mayor described the marriage ceremony as historic
Athens Mayor Harris Docs called the ceremony a “historic moment”, saying that every citizen of Athens should be able to live and love as they choose and this is an example of that.
Greece's parliament legalized gay marriage in a vote on February 15, despite strong opposition from the Social Orthodox Church. On Tuesday, church authorities on the island of Cornwall imposed a religious ban on two local MPs who voted for the change.
It is worth noting that same-sex marriage is still not legal in most parts of the European Union. Several member states, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, currently have constitutional provisions against it.
