Islamabad: A 22-year-old student in Pakistan has been sentenced to death on charges of blasphemy. The student is accused of saying derogatory words about Prophet Muhammad and making pictures and videos through WhatsApp.
Another 17-year-old student has been sentenced to life imprisonment because he was a minor. Let us tell you that the punishment for blasphemy in Pakistan is death. Although no one has been hanged by the state yet in this regard, there have been cases of angry people beating up and killing many accused.
The complaint was filed in 2022
According to the BBC report, a complaint was filed against the student by the Cyber Crime Unit of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in 2022. After which this action was taken. The complainant alleged that he received videos and photographs from three different mobile phone numbers which were quite objectionable.
The FIA said it examined the complainant's phone and found that 'indecent material' had been sent to him. However, the lawyers of both the students say that they have been implicated in a false case. According to BBC report, the father of the death row convict will file an appeal in Lahore High Court.
This matter is under discussion of blasphemy
Earlier in August last year, two Christian brothers were accused of 'desecrating' the Quran, after which more than 80 Christian houses and 19 churches were vandalized in Pakistan. In one of Pakistan's most high-profile cases, Christian woman Asia Bibi has been the central face of a blasphemy controversy for a decade. The court overturned Asiya's death sentence.
