Vice Admiral Surgeon Aarti Sarin has become the first woman Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services. He assumed charge on Tuesday. She is the first woman officer to lead a tri-service armed forces medical service, a landmark achievement in the history of the Indian Army.
It is noteworthy that DGAFMC is directly responsible to the Ministry of Defense in matters of medical policy related to the armed forces. An Indian Army official said that Aarti Sarin has become the highest-ranking female officer to serve in the Indian Armed Forces.
Who is Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin?
After schooling in Visakhapatnam, Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin studied at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. He started his services in the Indian Army in 1985. During his career he has made significant contributions to the Army, Navy and Air Force. Aarti Sarin is also trained in Gamma Knife Surgery with a Post Graduate Degree in Radiodiagnosis and Radiation Oncology. He has also served as Director General of Naval and Air Force Medical Services and Command Medical Officer of Southern Naval Command and Western Naval Command. She was recently appointed a member of the National Task Force by the Supreme Court to draft a protocol for security arrangements for doctors to encourage women to join the armed forces. For his excellent service, he was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal by President Draupadi Murmu in July this year.
