Air Marshal AP Singh has taken over as the new chief of the Indian Air Force. He has been given the charge by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary. Air Marshal AP Singh, an accomplished test pilot, took charge as the new chief of the Indian Air Force today. Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary was also present on this occasion. AP Singh will replace the current Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary. VR Chaudhary is retiring after completing his three-year tenure. Air Marshal AP Singh, born on 27 October 1964, was commissioned into the fighter pilot stream of the Indian Air Force in December 1984. During his long and distinguished service of nearly 40 years, he has served in various command, staff, instructional and overseas assignments. An alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Defense Services Staff College and National Defense College, the air officer is a qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot.
He has over 5,000 hours of experience flying various fixed and rotary wing aircraft. During his career, the officer has commanded operational fighter squadrons and frontline air bases. As a test pilot, he led the MiG-29 upgrade project management team in Moscow, Russia.

Air Marshal AP Singh was also the Project Director (Flight Test) at the National Flight Test Center and was entrusted with the flight testing of the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas. He has also held important staff appointments of Commander Air Defense in the South-Western Air Command and Senior Air Staff Officer in the Eastern Air Command. Before moving to Air Headquarters, he was also the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command.
