Guwahati, 29 September (Hindustan Reporter). Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly condemned the violent incidents that took place between the students of two hostels of Gauhati University on September 26 over the results of the Post Graduate Students Union (GUSU). The Council expressed its condolences to the injured students and wished for their speedy recovery.
Only talented students, most of whom come from economically weaker families, get seats in the hostels of Gauhati University. These students from all over Assam and North-East have taken admission in Gauhati University and are living in hostels. However, the academic environment of the university has deteriorated due to the illegal settlement of goons and other people in the hostels for a long time. On March 18, 2024, ABVP organized a constructive function. During this, unrest was spread in the university campus by kicking council flags, posters with pictures of Shaktipeeth Kamakhya and Bir Lachit Barphukan. Police arrived to control the situation and waited outside the university gate, but mysteriously the authorities did not allow the police to enter the university and remained mute spectators. If the university had suppressed these elements with a firm hand on the same day, such an incident would not have happened again. The Student Council has recommended several steps for the improvement of the university.
In these, demands have been made to provide free medical treatment to the injured students, identify the external and internal evil forces that perpetrate and instigate such incidents and take strict action against these forces, etc. Any student who complains against them in the university accommodation is also given death threats. In such circumstances, many students are forced to leave their hostels and live as paying guests. Or they leave their studies midway due to financial difficulties and return home.
Addressing a press conference today, Vidyarthi Parishad State Secretary Harold Mahan said that he appreciates the steps taken by the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University for the development of the university. He said that the Student Council's support towards him will continue.
