BJP has suffered a big setback before the Punjab Panchayat elections. Sunil Jakhar has resigned from the post of state president of Punjab BJP. He was maintaining distance from the party for the last several days.

It is being said that he was angry with the party. This is the reason why he did not attend the meeting held on Thursday regarding the preparations for the Panchayat elections. When a BJP leader called him about this, he refused to come to the meeting. He also said that he will not come to any meeting in future.

A year before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a big change was seen in Punjab BJP. After this the party handed over the command of the Punjab unit to former Congress leader Sunil Jakhar. Jakhar, one of the prominent leaders of Punjab Congress, joined the BJP in May 2022 after the Congress' defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections. He joined the saffron party in the presence of national president JP Nadda.

Before this, Jakhar had been MLA from Abohar twice and MP from Gurdaspur once.
