New Delhi, September 23 (HS). Indian Sign Language and Research Center (ISLRTC) in collaboration with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities on Monday launched 2500 new sign words for the Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary. This dictionary will be available online in 10 different languages. With this, the number of ISL has increased to 12,500. In the program organized on the occasion of International Sign Language Day at Dr. Ambedkar International Center on Monday, the theme of this year's Sign Language Day has been kept as “Support for Sign Language Rights”.
The program was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment BL Verma. Rajesh Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, was also present as the special guest of the program. On this occasion, 100 basic concept videos in ISL on science, social science, mathematics and English subjects for class 6 were also launched. Along with this, the deaf role model video developed by Indian Signing Hands was unveiled and accessible educational stories in ISL for children of all age groups were released.
Union Minister of State BL Verma said that the Central Government has always been sensitive towards the Divyang community. Sign language is not just the language of the deaf community but there is a need to make the society more inclusive by making it the language of the masses. He emphasized the need for widespread use of sign language for the prosperity of the deaf community. He said that there is no dearth of talent in our Divyang brothers and sisters, if they are provided a platform, they will surprise the whole world with their talent. Our Divyang players have also proved this in the Paralympics held in Paris 2024. Creating history in this Paralympics, our Divyang players won 29 medals. By making the Divyang community self-reliant, our country will also move forward and will realize the dream of Prime Minister Modi's Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
On this occasion, Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal said that to integrate deaf children into the mainstream, it is important that their parents and people of the society learn and use sign language. He also said that technology and English education will play an important role in making deaf children self-reliant. He said that by the year 2035, India will move from 15th place to 5th place in Paralympics.
During the event, AIFDW Chief Uma Kapoor and IDBA Usha Punjabi, NAD Chief A.S Narayanan also shared their views. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Joint Secretary Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Rajeev Sharma, Deputy Director ISLRTC Sanjay Kumar and students, teachers and parents from the deaf community.
