Among all the eight idols of Lord Shiva, the Prithvi idol is the best in earth, water, light, air, sky, sun, moon and host. Worshiping the newly constructed Shiva Linga gives more results than penance.
Sutji says – Worship of the earth is virtuous and auspicious in every way, it gives long life and provides satisfaction, confirmation and Lakshmi.
Puja should be done only with the available material, this will fulfill all the wishes. The person who builds a beautiful altar with the earthly Linga and worships it, becomes rich in wealth in this world and ultimately reaches Rudraloka.
The person who builds an earthly Shivalinga and worships it daily throughout his life, attains Shivlok. He lives in Shivlok in the company of Lord Shiva for countless years and if he has any wish left then he becomes the emperor of India.
The dead Shivalinga should be kept intact
There is a tradition to worship Lord Shiva on the banks of a river or pond, on a mountain, in a forest, in a Shiva temple or at any holy place.
The rules for making mortal Shivalinga are also explained in the Puranas. Parthivalinga should always be constructed in an unbroken form. That means Shivalinga should be made from a big lump of soil only. Not from different bodies.
Bring soil very carefully from a pure place and build an intact Shivalinga.
There is a rule to make Shivalinga with white soil for Brahmins, red soil for Kshatriyas, yellow soil for Vaishyas and black soil for Shudras. Or make Shivalinga from whatever soil is available. After this, worship Lord Shiva according to the scriptures.
