This year, many parts of the country are receiving heavy rainfall during the rainy season. This time, not only the eastern coastal states of the country, but also the western coastal states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc. have been flooded. The gates of numerous dams have been opened due to which the low lying areas are flooded.

This is causing damage to standing crops and property. Now such a situation has started arising every second or third year, sometimes in one state and sometimes in another. As a result, urban property and infrastructure are suffering huge losses. Indian farmers and agricultural laborers are part of the rural economy. Due to climate change, sometimes drought, sometimes flood and sometimes cyclone have started affecting them.

Crops are getting destroyed due to waterlogging in rural areas. Due to this water crisis, the farmers who had gone above the poverty line are once again touching or going below the poverty line. Facing natural calamities has now become an annual tradition. Now new measures will have to be thought of to permanently bring the farmers and agricultural labourers out of the circle of poverty.

Therefore, there is an increased need to improve the drainage system and develop better infrastructure for drainage to avoid losses due to heavy rains. India meets its food needs from 2.4 percent of the world's geographical area and four percent of water resources, but pulses and oilseed crops suffer the most damage due to floods caused by heavy rains. The country is already facing a shortage of pulses and edible oils.

In fact, the abundance of water is their enemy. The year 2016 was celebrated as the International Bride Year. Meanwhile, India was forced to import pulses from the world market. To meet the domestic demand, India knocked the doors of countries like Canada, Myanmar, Tanzania, Mozambique etc. but they too had a shortage of pulses. Therefore, India was forced to import pulses from other countries at high prices. Since then, their prices have increased considerably. There is a possibility of such a situation arising this year as well. India's population has become more than that of China. In such a situation, it has become very important to think about the food security of the country.
