Bholenath went to Kashi through this route

There are many legends about Unakoti. It is also said that Lord Shiva was going to Banaras from here with many gods. Meanwhile, he passed through Raghunandan mountain. Unakoti was earlier known as Raghunandan mountain. When it was night time, all the gods and goddesses got tired. Then Lord Shankar said that Raghunandan will rest on the mountain for the whole night and will leave for Varanasi in the morning.

But, unfortunately, none of the gods opened their eyes the next morning. Mahadev got up and left for Varanasi alone. It is said that the gods and goddesses who could not get up would turn into stones. This is also one of the folklores that many people believe in. Unakoti means less than one crore.

The whole valley looks like a part of the temple

The entire valley of Unakoti looks like a huge temple. As far as the eye can see on the hill spread over an area of ​​about one kilometer, ancient statues of gods and goddesses carved on stones are visible. There are statues of many gods and goddesses including Chaturmukhi Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Durga Mata, Lakshmi Mata, apart from this you will also find the statue of Ravana here, who is seen aiming with a bow and arrow in his hand.

A Sita pond is also built nearby, from which a stream of water flows. There is a religious belief that bathing at this place brings virtue. People coming here have to bathe in this pond.

Lord Vishwakarma's son created the idols

Another story is popular among the local people. This story is about Kallu Kumar, the son of Lord Vishwakarma. The tribal people living here say that Kallu Kumar wanted to go to Kailash with Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati but Bholenath did not like him much.

So he made a bet that if Kallu Kumar makes one crore idols in one night, he can come to Kailash. Kallu Kumar worked hard all night and made idols. However, when the count was done in the morning, one idol was found less than one crore and Kallu Kumar could not go to Kailash. Due to less than one crore idols, this place is named Unakoti.

According to another legend, at the beginning of Kali Yuga, the gods and goddesses decided to leave the earth and go to heaven. They knew that this place would not be habitable in Kali Yuga, but they also decided that they would leave their idols here so that in the future, people who come here to seek their blessings can take them away.
