A 28km stretch of NH-44 built at a cost of Rs 960 crore in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh has fallen into a dilapidated state. Just three years after its inauguration, potholes have appeared on the highway, and in two stretches of the highway, the road has broken down to such an extent that a 50-metre stretch has been barricaded and repaired.
The country's first soundproof highway
Only Rs 960 crore has been spent on the construction of the 28 km long highway passing through the Pench Tiger Reserve. This highway made headlines in 2021 as it is the country's first soundproof highway with special metal sheets installed on both sides to prevent vehicle noise from reaching the forest.
Underpasses were built beneath the elevated road
Thousands of vehicles pass through this highway every day. Underpasses have been built under the 9 kilometer long elevated road for the movement of animals. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also inspected this part of the highway twice during the construction, but still the pictures of the poor condition of the highway say a lot.
Seeing the plight of the highway, questions were raised about the functioning of the system
There are so many potholes on the road that commuters have to pass by zigzag. In some parts of the highway, it is not clear whether the potholes are in the middle of the road or the road is somewhere between the potholes. Questions are being raised not only on the construction company but also on the NHAI working under the leadership of Nitin Gadkari regarding this bad condition of the highway. Repair work has been started at one place. At present, traffic is passing through only one part.
