The state BJP has been blocking Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's efforts to clear legally reserved land and evict suspected citizens of Bangladeshi origin from protected indigenous land to stop illegal occupation of tribal belts and protect the indigenous people of Assam. Congress leaders have indirectly sided with the occupiers and adopted an anti-indigenous stance by criticizing the state government's move to evict and clear land illegally occupied by suspected Bangladeshi Muslims in tribal belts and blocks in Sonpur, Guwahati for the last three days. Such support from the Congress emboldened the suspected encroachers and led to brutal attacks on policemen who tried to remove them en masse.
In a statement today, State BJP spokesperson Dr. Juri Sharma Bordoloi said that the Congress has always taken a stand in favour of Muslims of Bangladeshi origin and prevented the indigenous people from claiming their rights over the land. In the past, the BJP government led by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has made continuous efforts to free large reserved forests, tribal belts and blocks, pastures and other government lands including Garukhuti, Lumding, Lakshipur etc. from illegal occupation. During the Congress government, these lands were illegally occupied by suspected Muslim citizens of Bangladeshi origin, depriving the indigenous people and destroying the environment in Assam through destruction of forests. The Congress party is obstructing the government's efforts to save Assam's forests from destruction and to get back pasture lands, other government lands and tribal belts and blocks from encroachers. Therefore, it is clear that the Congress party always stands against the indigenous people and supports the Muslims of Bengali origin, the spokesperson said.
