Food Department, FCI sign MoU to improve foodgrain procurement system and distribution | News India

New Delhi, September 13 (HS). The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) and Food Corporation of India (FCI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement has been made to improve the procurement and distribution system of food grains.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a statement issued on Friday that DFPD and FCI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the current financial year 2024-25. The objective of this agreement is to increase the efficiency and accountability of food grain procurement and distribution.

The ministry said that this MoU is an initiative that reflects the commitment of the Central Government to improve the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ensure that food subsidy funds are managed with the highest level of efficiency by enhancing the overall performance of FCI operations and its depots. The MoU outlines specific performance standards (including FCI depot performance standards) and accountability measures aimed at optimising the use of public funds in managing food security operations.

It is noteworthy that FCI was established in 1965 under an Act of Parliament called the Food Corporation Act, 1964 (Act No. 37 of 1964). Its primary duty is to procure, store, move and transport, distribute and sell food grains.
