New Delhi: Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury (72) died at 3.05 pm on Thursday at AIIMS. He was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 after complaining of pneumonia.

As per Sitaram Yechury's wish, the family donated his body to AIIMS for medical research. After the death of Sitaram Yechury, the biggest question that has arisen is who will lead the CPIM i.e. who will be the next general secretary of the party. Three names are leading in the race for the general secretary.

The first name is that of Bengal CPM secretary Mohammad Salim. He has also been a member of the Lok Sabha. Salim, who comes from a minority community, is a brilliant speaker. In 2015, he was elected a member of the Politburo.

The other name is MV Govindan. He is the general secretary of CPIM in Kerala. He is also close to CMP Vijayan.

While the third name is that of former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. If it comes to appointing a leader from outside Bengal or Kerala as General Secretary, then Manik Sarkar is being seen as an option.

While the fourth name is of Prakash Karat. She was the General Secretary of the party from 2005 to 2015. She has completed three terms as General Secretary. According to the CPM constitution, a Politburo member can become General Secretary only three times.
